Beware of snakes this summer
03 January 2011.
AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley has warned Victorians to be vigilant of snakes this summer when hiking, gardening or cleaning up debris.
"There are more snakes around this year because of the wet weather," he said. "Encounters with snakes are certainly not common but doctors treat a handful of patients for snake bites each summer, many which could have been avoided.
"We’re in holiday season where families are going camping, children are playing outdoors and yards and gardens are being tidied, so it’s worth thinking about a few precautions in case you or a family member encounters a snake.
"Wear adequate clothing and sturdy shoes in long grass, scrub or bush settings, rather than sandals or thongs. Children should always avoid playing in long grass.
"When stepping over logs, carefully inspect the ground on the other side. If you see a snake, step back from it slowly and allow it proceed on its way. Do not touch it or antagonise it.
"If you find a snake in your house, try not to panic. Seek advice from someone who knows how to safely remove the snake. Contact the Department of Sustainability on 136 186 for the details of your nearest licensed snake catcher.
"If you are bitten, seek urgent medical attention and try to remember the colour or shape of the snake, as this will help with treatment.
"If you cannot get to the hospital immediately, apply first aid. Lay or sit down with the bite below the level of your heart and wrap the bitte n limb in a firm crepe or gauze bandage, if available."
