Concerns over Mornington Peninsula health services
“Doctors are concerned about the state of health care services in the Mornington Peninsula region,” AMA Victoria Board member Dr John Leslie said today.
“The Baillieu Government must act to reduce the red tape, bureaucracy and resource shortages that doctors have to contend with,” said Dr Leslie.
Dr Leslie made his comments following an AMA Victoria meeting with doctors from the Mornington Peninsula and surrounding regions.
“Doctors voiced their concerns about local issues and discussed the Baillieu Government’s Health Services Plan 2022,” said Dr Leslie.
“Doctors are best placed to provide insight into the health system and how it can be improved. Every day they experience first hand the impacts on patient care caused by a lack of resources.”
Department of Health Director Mr Steve Ballard attended the meeting to hear from doctors and outline the Plan. The Health Services Plan 2022 will provide a blueprint for the future of Victoria’s entire health care system and also involve consultation with a range of stakeholders.
Doctors expressed concerns about practitioners of alternative medicine representing themselves to the public as doctors.
“I would be concerned if a patient who visited one of these clinics believed they were being treated by a medical practitioner. Doctors have many years of study and training under their belt and are governed by strict regulations,” said Dr Leslie.
Doctors also discussed Medicare Locals and the impact that they will have on healthcare in the region. “Medicare Locals are going to add another layer of bureaucracy to our already complex healthcare system, without any clear benefit to the quality or availability of patient care,” said Dr Leslie.
“It is unclear why the Commonwealth Government is spending half a billion dollars to give less control to patients and their doctors and more control to yet more bureaucrats.”
Doctors had the opportunity to take the floor to update their colleagues and AMA Victoria representatives on issues of concern and ideas for improving health care in the region.
