Critical mistake data released
It is encouraging that there were fewer critical errors in Victorian public hospitals than in previous years, AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said today.
“It was welcome to see that the amount of errors reported for 2009-10 is at its lowest since this data began to be collected,” said Dr Hemley.
Dr Hemley made his comments following yesterday’s release of the Sentinel event program annual report 2009–10 which revealed that 57 sentinel events were reported in 2009-10.
“The Doing it with us not for us policy and cultural responsiveness framework introduced by the previous government have begun to have an effect,” said Dr Hemley. “We look forward to working with the Baillieu Government to continue this positive trend.”
“These incidents also demonstrate the importance of the clinical audit process in Victorian hospitals that helps to ensure that these mistakes happen as rarely as possible.
"Even one mistake is too many. We have to be vigilant about the clinical audit process and must be mindful of the tremendous pressure hospital staff are under due to the high demand for services.
“Further investment in the medical workforce and continuing medical education will help to ensure that these errors are minimised.”
