Doctors call for red tape relief

“Patients are suffering because of the burden red tape places upon general practitioners,” AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said today.

AMA Victoria has written to Louise Asher, the Minister for Small Business, calling for a reduction in the red tape that general practitioners have to contend with.

“General practitioners spend countless hours working through red tape by filling in forms, causing hundreds of patients to miss out on care every day,” said Dr Hemley.

“Slashing regulatory red tape would allow general practitioners to spend more time caring for patients.”

AMA Victoria and Small Business Victoria have identified over 100 Government forms that doctors need to fill in.

“For every hour a GP spends doing paperwork, around four patients are denied access to a doctor,” said Dr Hemley.

The recently released draft report by the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission into Victoria’s regulatory framework highlighted the importance of reducing unnecessary regulatory burdens.

AMA Victoria is calling on the Baillieu Government to honour its election commitment to reduce red tape by at least 25%.

“The current regulatory burden being placed on doctors is only going to get worse if Medicare Locals are implemented,” said Dr Hemley. Tenders for the first tranche of Medicare Locals are due on 5 April, 2011.

“The Commonwealth Government proposes to spend half-a-billion dollars on yet more bureaucracy. Bureaucracy that will inevitably get between patients, their doctors and the care they require.”

AMA Victoria has written to Premier Baillieu calling on the State Government to oppose Medicare Locals in their current form.
