Doctors welcome new Royal Children’s Hospital

26 October 2011

The redeveloped Royal Children’s Hospital will provide world class medical treatment to Victoria’s children and young people in uniquely welcoming surrounds, AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said today.

Dr Hemley made his comments following today’s official opening of the new Royal Children's Hospital by Her Royal Majesty the Queen.

“Children are the future of our community and they deserve the very best in health care,” said Dr Hemley.

“We know that the doctors and staff are excited about moving into the new hospital.

“In addition to providing excellent treatment for Victoria’s youngest patients the Royal Children’s Hospital also provides world class training and facilities for young doctors and researchers.”

The new Royal Children’s Hospital will be home to the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the University of Melbourne’s Department of Paediatrics.

“The new Royal Children’s Hospital is the result of the community coming together to make sure this vital project was delivered,” said Dr Hemley. “Funding from both Coalition and Labor Governments and generous donations by thousands of Victorians to the Good Friday Appeal have made it possible.”

The new Royal Children’s Hospital will have 357 beds with capacity for additional beds and will treat an additional 35,000 patients per year. Patients will be transferred to the new hospital on November 30th.

“Given the ongoing pressure on paediatric services in Victoria the additional hospital beds are particularly welcome,” said Dr Hemley.
