Simple steps to fight flu
18 April 2011
Doctors are urging Victorians to take simple steps to protect themselves and others against the flu this winter.
AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said today that if Victorians get vaccinated, wash their hands and stay home when sick, they can greatly reduce their chances of infection.
“We’re not just talking about common colds,” Dr Hemley said. “Influenza is a highly contagious disease which is spread through coughing or sneezing. It can cause serious and debilitating complications for the elderly and people with suppressed immunity.
“Flu vaccination is the most effective protection against the influenza virus. Autumn is a good time for vaccinations, as the flu season usually begins in winter.
“Washing your hands regularly with soap and water, protecting others by covering your mouth while coughing or sneezing, and disposing of used tissues appropriately are simple measures that make a difference in reducing flu transmission.
“It is also important not to go to work or school if you are exhibiting symptoms. If people stay at home they’re much less likely to infect others.”
