Stawell Prize awarded by AMA Victoria
19 May 2011
AMA Victoria has awarded the annual Stawell Prize for medical research to a team working at the Western Health Department of Medicine.
Professor Peter Ebeling accepted the award on the team’s behalf at AMA Victoria’s AGM on Tuesday night. Professor Ebeling’s team included Dr Kathryn Hackman, Dr Claudia Gagnon, Ms Roisin Briscoe, Dr Simon Lam and Dr Mahesan Anpalahan.
The prize was awarded for research into the comparative efficacy and safety of long-term low-dose versus short-term high-dose vitamin D treatments. The team concluded that a high-dose regimen may be an effective and cheap alternative treatment for patients with a vitamin D deficiency.
AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley praised the team’s accomplishment. “This research is particularly valuable given the recent increase in patients being diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency.”
The annual Stawell Prize is awarded for a piece of research “on a medical subject of clinical significance… which is original, evidence-based and which is likely to advance knowledge, influence clinical practice and improve the health of Australians.”
AMA Victoria also confirmed its new board and council appointments at its AGM on Tuesday night.
“I look forward to working with the new AMA Victoria Board and Council,” said Dr Hemley. “I would also like to thank those councilors who are stepping down for their contribution to AMA Victoria and the health of all Victorians,” said Dr Hemley.
