Take care this Easter

AMA Victoria Vice President and emergency physician Dr Stephen Parnis has urged Victorians to be mindful of their health and safety over the Easter weekend.

“Motorists must take care on the roads over Easter. Take regular breaks, slow down and make sure you are not affected by alcohol or fatigue,” Dr Parnis said.

“Doctors have a dream for long weekends,” Dr Parnis said, “that they will be able to sit in emergency departments with nothing to do, rather than respond to road trauma.

“If motorists take care, have concern for other road users, and be patient, hopefully we all can make an emergency doctor happy this weekend.”

"Many of us are not used to driving on highways or country roads, where conditions can change quickly,” he said. “Please take care on country roads. If the roads are wet, make sure you slow down. “

Ninety-one Victorians have lost their lives on Victorian roads this year.

“Easter is also a time when people should be mindful of their food and alcohol intake,” said Dr Parnis, “it is easy to overindulge but Victorians should remember that excessive consumption of foods like chocolate can have lasting health effects.”

Excess chocolate consumption has been linked to dental caries and obesity.

“Easter is a time to relax and celebrate with friends and family but it is important to do so in a safe and healthy way.”
