Tomorrow’s doctors learn valuable lesson

15 April 2011

Medical students need to take care of each other, not just their patients, AMA Victoria Doctors in Training Subdivision President Dr James Hillis said today.

Dr Hillis made his comments as over 70 medical students prepare to take part in tomorrow’s Care Factor Workshop being run by AMA Victoria and the Australian Medical Students' Association.

The participants will hear from a range of speakers including representatives from beyondblue and the Victorian Doctors' Health Program.

“Medical students will participate in a workshop to provide them with skills to help colleagues during times of stress and distress,” said Dr Hillis.

“The workshop will focus on assisting colleagues in accessing appropriate support services. The students will also receive talks on topics including How to convince a medical student to seek help and How to decrease the mental-health stigma in a stigma-charged environment.

“As medical students begin their careers as doctors they confront unique challenges which can have a negative impact on their wellbeing.

“Research has shown that medical students have lower levels of psychological wellbeing than their peers in other fields.

“Hopefully participants will also use tips from the Care Factor Workshop to improve their own wellbeing.

"Medical students with better wellbeing perform better academically. Similarly, doctors with better wellbeing provide better patient care."

The Australian Medical Students’ Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Medical Students' Association is launching the Wellbeing Booklet which provides guidance on mental health and other issues that medical students and young doctors encounter.
