Western suburbs doctors discuss health plan

4 March 2011.

Last night, AMA Victoria met with doctors from Melbourne’s western suburbs to hear their concerns about local issues and discuss the Baillieu Government’s Health Services Plan 2022.

“Doctors at the coalface of the Victorian health system have the best understanding of how the system could be improved,” said AMA Victoria Vice President Dr Stephen Parnis.

Jon Evans from the Department of Health attended the meeting to hear from doctors regarding the Plan.

“Doctors told Mr Evans of the need for investment in the health system and the importance of information sharing between different sectors of the health care system,” said Dr Parnis.

Mr Evans also spoke about the Metropolitan Health Plan which will form part of the Government’s Health Services Plan 2022.

“Doctors had the opportunity to take the floor for two minutes to update their colleagues and AMA Victoria representatives on issues of concern and ideas for improving health care in the region.

“Issues high on the agenda for local doctors were funding for public hospitals in the area and decreasing the amount of red tape that GPs have to contend with,” said Dr Parnis.

Joining Dr Parnis at the meeting were around twenty local doctors including former AMA Australia President Mukesh Haikerwal.

The Health Services Plan 2022 will provide a plan for the future of Victoria’s entire health care system and will involve consultation with a range of stakeholders in the Victorian health system.
