Wimmera doctors discuss health plan

11 March 2011.

This week, AMA Victoria met with doctors from the Wimmera region to hear their concerns about local issues and discuss the Baillieu Government’s Health Services Plan 2022.

“Doctors in rural and regional Victoria face unique challenges when providing care to patients,” said AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley.

“Wimmera doctors play an important role in shaping AMA Victoria’s rural and regional health initiatives and we value their input.”

Regional Director Tom Niederle from the Department of Health attended the meeting to hear from doctors about the Plan.

“Doctors told Mr Niederle of the need to attract new doctors to the region to address a growing shortage in the area,” said Dr Hemley.

Mr Niederle also spoke about the Rural and Regional Health Plan which will form part of the Government’s Health Services Plan 2022.

The Health Services Plan 2022 will provide a plan for the future of Victoria’s entire health care system and will involve consultation with a range of stakeholders in the Victorian health system.

Doctors had the opportunity to take the floor to update their colleagues and AMA Victoria representatives on issues of concern and ideas for improving health care in the region.

“Issues high on the agenda for local doctors were the rural workforce shortage, the lack of time and resources available to train new doctors and the dangerously long hours that they are required to work,” said Dr Hemley.
