AMA Family Doctor Week
“Family Doctor: Your Medical Home”
15 – 21 July
Family Doctor Week is the AMA’s annual celebration of the hard work and dedication of the nation’s GPs. Last year more than 29,000 GPs provided over 129 million services across Australia. This year’s theme for Family Doctor Week is “Your Family Doctor – Your Medical Home”.
“GPs are an integral part of the community and a cornerstone of the health system, and Family Doctor Week is an opportunity for all Victorians to appreciate the important relationship they have with their local GP” AMA Victoria President, Dr Stephen Parnis, said today.
Victorian GPs provide vital primary care and services to patients right across the state and are often the first point of call when it comes to illness.
On any given day, patients seek advice from their GP on a range of issues including injuries, diseases, mental health, vaccinations, addiction, family planning and conditions associated with ageing.
However, Dr Parnis also emphasised that Family Doctor Week is an opportunity to acknowledge that GPs are under continuing pressure from growing patient numbers, ongoing training requirements, stalled Medicare rebates and burdensome red tape.
By highlighting the contribution of GPs to the health sector and the challenges they face, the AMA hopes to draw attention to the issues threatening the delivery of primary care: services that are essential to the health of all Victorians.
