AMA Victoria welcomes Peter Dutton as new Health Minister

16 September 2013

AMA Victoria welcomes today’s appointment of Peter Dutton as the Coalition’s new Minister for Health, and wish him success in improving the health of all Australians.

“The Minister has been an effective opposition health spokesman, which will serve him well in government, AMA Victoria President Dr Stephen Parnis said.

“The Coalition Government has made high profile commitments to improve the health system, which include: restoring independence of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee; reviewing the Medicare Locals structure; committing to 100 additional medical internships, each year for 4 years; and doubling PIP payments from $100 to $200 for teaching in general practice.

“We look forward to the delivery of these promises, and hope to work closely with the government as they are implemented.

“AMA Victoria’s key health concerns include greater hospital capacity, particularly in regard to bed numbers, and also the proper indexation of the Medicare Benefits Schedule. We encourage the new federal government to examine these issues and to appropriately fund our health system, said Dr Parnis.
