Budget must honour promises, says Dr Hemley

The health of every Victorian hinges on the Baillieu Government honouring its election commitments when the Treasurer delivers the State Budget on Tuesday afternoon, AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said today.

“This is their first Budget and the electorate will be judging them on their sincerity,” Dr Hemley said. “They must now make good on their election commitments.

“The Victorian health system is in need of significant investment with many sectors facing severe shortages,” said Dr Hemley.

"Our public hospital system is under significant pressure, country Victoria is crying out for more doctors and there are not the resources available to train our next generation of doctors.”

Dr Hemley said that when in opposition the Coalition made a number of promises to improve Victoria’s health system if they won government.

“The Baillieu Government promised to fund 800 new beds in its first term of Government including 100 new beds in the next financial year; it also committed to a $1 billion Health Infrastructure Fund and to provide $108.5 million to mental health care in Victoria.

“The budget must also include funding for the Coalition’s promises to rural and regional Victoria.,” Dr Hemley said.

“The Coalition promised to build a new hospital in Bendigo, set up a $56 million regional capital works grants program and launch a range of rural and regional workforce initiatives.”
