Changes to TAC and WorkSafe invoice payments

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and WorkSafe Victoria (WorkSafe) have notified AMA Victoria of changes to their payment systems, designed to streamline treatment payments for medical practitioners. The Treatment Payments and Connectivity (TPC) Program, a joint initiative between the two organisations, is currently developing a single, consistent, automated payment processing system for use across both organisations.

To avoid any delay in processing, practices should include the full Medicare provider number of the treating doctor and the patient's claim number on any invoices generated. AMA Victoria recommends that If the patient does not have a claim number you should bill and have the patient pay for the treatment. This will ensure that the practice does not subsequently become embroiled in red tape if a claim is rejected or invoices are left unpaid.

This new system is being implemented in stages. WorkSafe moved to the first stage in mid-December 2010, processing medical practitioner invoices via the new system. One of the resulting changes you may have already noticed with WorkSafe is that denied services now appear on remittance advices, accompanied by the reason for denial. This is aimed at providing practitioners with more information and facilitating better reconciliation of invoices and payments.

The TAC implemented this new payment processing system for medical practitioner invoices from the start of July 2011. The TAC will no longer be able to accept invoices without a claim number or a Medicare provider number. Invoices submitted without a valid claim number and/or a Medicare provider number will not be accepted and your invoice will be returned to you. Also ensure that your Medicare provider number matches the address where the service was performed.

If you have any questions regarding these changes please email the TPC Program at TPC_Program@worksafe.vic.gov.au.
