Doctors call for blood donations

13 June 2011

Doctors have called on Victorians to save up to three lives by registering to donate blood during World Blood Donor Day on 14 June.

“One donation can save up to three lives yet only one in 30 people currently donate blood. Many more Victorians can donate – most fit and healthy people up to the age of 70 are eligible,” said AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley.

“World Blood Donor Day is a good opportunity to register to become a regular blood donor or to learn more about the Australian Red Cross Blood Service’s requirements,” said Dr Hemley.

World Blood Donor Day is held annually on 14 June and is coordinated by the World Health Organisation.

“Blood donations are used every day in our health system,” said Dr Hemley.

“Donated blood, plasma and platelets save the lives of cancer sufferers, trauma accident victims, burns patients, newborn babies and those undergoing surgery.

“1 in 3 people will require blood at some point in their lives. You or someone you know is likely to require blood in the future.

“Workplaces should encourage and make allowances for their employees to donate blood.”

Dr Hemley also said that 16 and 17 year old Victorians are now entitled to donate blood without parental consent.

Register to donate blood by calling 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au
