Eastern suburbs doctors call for IT investment
The Government must act to improve information technology in Victoria’s health system, said AMA Victoria Board Member Dr Tony Bartone.
“Doctors are concerned about Victoria’s failing health IT systems. There is a lack of resources for IT across the health sector,” said Dr Bartone.
“There are ongoing problems with hospital IT systems and the interface between general practice and hospitals. Patients require a seamless transition between acute and primary care settings but at the moment there are numerous roadblocks which impact on their ongoing health care.”
“Victoria also needs investment in telemedicine which can help alleviate workforce shortages in regional Victoria.”
Dr Bartone made his comments following a meeting of doctors from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. AMA Victoria met with local doctors to hear their concerns about local issues and discuss the Baillieu Government’s Health Services Plan 2022.
Jon Evans from the Department of Health attended the meeting to hear from doctors regarding the Plan.
“Doctors told Mr Evans of the need for investment in the health IT systems and the importance of information sharing between different sectors of the health care system,” said Dr Bartone.
“Doctors had the opportunity to take the floor for two minutes to update their colleagues and AMA Victoria representatives on issues of concern and ideas for improving health care in the region.
“Issues high on the agenda for local doctors were concerns about the impending implementation of Medicare Locals and Lead Clinician Groups,” said Dr Bartone.
Joining Dr Bartone at the meeting were around thirty doctors from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
The Health Services Plan 2022 will provide a plan for the future of Victoria’s entire health care system and will involve consultation with a range of stakeholders in the Victorian health system. The first stages of the plan are due to be released by the Baillieu Government later this month.
