Health left off the G-20 agenda

If only they realised that health is the greatest social capital a nation can have...

Thursday 30 October

The G-20 Summit will be held in Brisbane next month, and it continues to disappoint the international medical community that health has been omitted from the world leaders’ agenda.

In response, AMA Victoria, along with the World Medical Association and AMA Federal, will be hosting the “H20 International Health Summit” - advocating for health and healthcare access for all people.

To be held on 13-14 November at the Windsor Hotel in Melbourne, the purpose of this Summit is simple: to engage in high level discussion on major international health concerns, and present these findings to delegates at the G-20 summit.

“It is unacceptable that health has been omitted from this year’s G-20 agenda,” AMA Victoria President, Dr Tony Bartone said.

“It has been said that “health is the greatest social capital a nation can have” – the AMA wholly supports this statement. The H20 Summit will present a united voice to our world leaders that access to healthcare and the global health issues that we face must be addressed,” Dr Bartone said.

The H20 Summit will have over 35 international speakers and panellists, including the world renowned:

Dr Robin Coupland,
Chief Surgeon & Medical Adviser, International Committee of the Red Cross
The challenges to global health and health care: the views of the ICRC

Emeritus Prof. Stephen Leeder,
Editor-in-Chief, Medical Journal Australia, Chair, Western Sydney Local Health District Board
Non communicable diseases across the globe
Prof. Dinesh Bhugra,
President World Psychiatrists Assoc.,
Past President Royal College of Psychiatrists UK, Professor of Psychiatry at Kings College, University of London
International action addressing mental health
Dr Osahon Enabulele,
Past President of Nigerian Medical Assoc., VP Commonwealth MA
Social determinants of health
Dr Alessandro Demaio,
Global Health Fellow in NCDs & Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School & Copenhagen School of Global Health
Rising to the challenges with action now: how we can all act
Dr Otmar Kloiber,
Secretary General, World Medical Association
Delivering global health in a changing world

The H20 Summit will engage with world leaders in health, collaborate with our international colleagues, and make it clear to G-20 that health has a direct correlation with a country’s economy, and our world leaders must make a health a priority.

The H20 International Health Summit is proudly supported by: the Victorian Department of Health, CSL, Telstra, NAB, Medibank, TressCox Lawyers, Avant and MDA National.
