Letter to the editor regarding childhood obesity

13 September 2011
As was reported in yesterday's 6 Minutes the costs of childhood obesity are already being born by Australian primary school students (“Screen overweight children in primary school”, 6 Minutes, 12 September 2011).

As reported, a recent WA study concluded that overweight children should be screened for weight related co-morbidities. It also highlights that the effects of childhood obesity are being felt today as many school children are suffering weight related medical complications — complications that will only worsen as they age if these issues aren’t addressed now.

This study is a timely reminder that serious public health interventions that target childhood obesity cannot wait. All Australian Governments will meet in December to consider the Blewett Review’s recommendations on food labelling, including a proposed national traffic-light labelling system. Medical professionals should lobby their State and Federal MPs to support the Review’s recommendations.
