#StopTheCoP on World Family Doctor Day

19 May 2014

"Australia's much envied, irreplaceable and brilliant healthcare system is under threat from a Government that is determined to end universal healthcare: that is, access to health services for all Australians, regardless of their financial means," AMA Victoria President and GP, Dr Tony Bartone said.

"$7 CoPs will stop access. Many Australians won't be able to afford to see their GP to discuss their chest pains, glucose levels, pregnancy concerns, constant migraines or depression. It will jeopardise immunisation levels. It puts preventative healthcare back fifty years. These are important medical concerns and $7 will stop access.

"Minister Dutton must ensure, maintain and improve access to healthcare for all Australians: $7 CoPs do the opposite.

"We urge the Government, opposing parties and the public to Stop the CoP, as it will have a dire affect on patients, especially those who are the most vulnerable," Dr Bartone said.

General practice is the most efficient part of the Australian healthcare system. The desire to get the Budget to a surplus should not be at the cost of our world-class healthcare system, the cornerstone of which is general practice.
