Overseas Doctors
Due to shortages of doctors, particularly in rural Victoria, there are positions for suitably qualified overseas doctors seeking to work here.
The Department of Health and Ageing (DHA), the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and Victorian Department of Human Services determine the requirements for registration and recognition of qualifications for International Medical Graduates (overseas trained doctors) to work in the state of Victoria.
AMA Victoria is not involved in the recruitment or registration of doctors. International Medical Graduates who gain registration with the Medical Registration Board of Victoria are eligible to join AMA Victoria.
The following are links to useful information for doctors considering working in Victoria.
Visas, immigration and working in Australia
Medical practitioners are included on the skilled occupations list under Australian Government immigration arrangements. There is more information on immigration, residency status, working visits, which visas have work rights, etc. at the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs.
Qualifications and registration
To work in Victoria, doctors must be registered with the Medical Board of Australia. For information about registration requirements, see http://www.medicalboard.gov.au/
Australian Medical Council
If your medical qualifications are not recognised by the medical board, and you want to practice medicine in Australia, you need to pass Australian Medical Council (AMC) medical and clinical exams and complete supervised training approved by the relevant medical board. You must also meet the AMC's English language standard.
Rural work opportunities
A number of schemes are available to attract suitably qualified doctors to work in rural Victoria. The Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV) was established to address the shortage of doctors in rural Victoria and recruits doctors under these schemes and programs to work as General Practitioners in rural communities.
Overseas specialists
Medical specialists considering work in Australia should have their training and experience assessed by the relevant Australian medical college, prior to being accepted for registration.
