BYPC&E: The life cycle of your practice

AMA Victoria's annual Build Your Practice Conference & Exhibition (BYPC&E) returns on Saturday 22 September at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event is for doctors and practice managers who want to build, manage and grow a successful private medical practice.

This year, our expert presenters will explore subjects spanning the depth and breadth of private practice, including:

billing claims and payments
financial and risk management
IT, cyber security and records management
managing staff and having difficult conversations
workplace mental health and wellbeing
marketing and growing your practice.

Presenter spotlight: Dr Mukesh Haikerwal AC

Dr Mukesh Haikerwal AC will be discussing ‘Setting up in Private Practice’. The presentation will focus on all the ‘ins and outs’, including signage on the front window, turning on the gas and electricity, registration and more. It will be structured as a big check list of things to tick off when setting up a private practice.

Over 25 years, Mukesh continued to work as GP in Melbourne’s west throughout his representative career which included terms as President and Vice President of AMA Victoria and Federal AMA and Chair of the World Medical Association.

Mukesh and his wife, Dr Karyn Alexander, opened CIRQIT Health in September 2016 above the Circle Health and Altona North Medical Group which they opened in March the same year with their partners. CIRQIT Health compliments traditional services promoting innovations in healthcare and care delivery.

He has been a passionate advocate for successful, sustainable general medical practices, the deployment of ICT (information and communications technology) in health and the ability to lead a happy medical career dedicated to the ‘joy of medicine’. As the practice has evolved, Mukesh has changed viewpoints around working with practice managers, nurses and other disciplines and partnerships.

Presenter spotlight: Dr Chris Moy MBBS, FRACGP, FAMA

Chris is an Adelaide GP with a long-standing involvement in the areas of aged care, end of life decision making, palliative care and digital health at both state and national levels.

He is a former member of the Expert Advisory Group of the SA Advance Care Directives Review and SA Health End of Life Working Group, and a current member of the SA End of Life Care Strategy Program Board.

Pursuing the imperative of advance care planning documents to be available alongside patient electronic health records has led to his commitment to the development of the My Health Record. He is a former member of the Independent Advisory Committee to the Minister of Health for the Patient Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR), the NEHTA Clinical Usability Program Steering Committee and the My Health Record Operations Management Committee. He is a current member of the My Health Record Expansion Program Steering Group and the Privacy and Security Advisory Committee of the Australian Digital Health Agency.

Chris is Chair of the Adelaide PHN Central Adelaide Clinical Council and a GP Clinical Editor for Health Pathways SA. He is the current Chair of the Ethics and Medico-legal Committee of the Australian Medical Association.
