AMA Family Doctor Week commences

Today marks the beginning of Family Doctor Week and AMA Victoria celebrates the dedication and hard work that is constantly exhibited by Victorian GPs.

“GPs are an integral part of the community and a cornerstone of the health system. Family Doctor Week is an opportunity for all Victorians to appreciate the important relationship they have with their GP” AMA Victoria President Dr Stephen Parnis said today.

Victorian GPs provide vital primary care and services to patients across the state and are often the first point of call when it comes to illness. On any given day, patients seek advice from their GP on a range of issues including injuries, diseases, mental health, vaccinations, family planning, addiction and conditions associated with ageing.

Family Doctor Week provides an opportunity for the community to recognise these efforts, while also acknowledging that GPs are under continuing pressure from growing patient numbers, ongoing training requirements, stalled Medicare rebates and burdensome red tape.

Throughout the week, the AMA will highlight the contribution of GPs to the health sector and also draw attention to the issues threatening the delivery of primary care: services that are essential to the health of all Victorians.
