The Basic Physician Training 1 (BPT1) match opened this week on 1 June. Information regarding the match and the process is available on the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) website.

While those in PGY1 (internship) are eligible to apply, AMA Victoria encourages applicants to carefully consider the implications of commencing BPT1 before completing the full second year of the national framework, which is a pre-requisite to receiving AMC certificate of completion.

Ultimately, the decision rests with each doctor based on their individual goals and circumstances.

Different health services approach BPT1 training in different ways. Some health services may explore options for rotations that meet both BPT1 and AMC certificate requirements, while others commence BPT1 training in PGY3. Check with your health service.

We encourage you to weigh up your readiness and training priorities and the research offerings of each health service when deciding whether to apply in PGY1 year or wait until PGY2.
