#223 Workplace relations update: 1 October

Here’s an update on a few of the issues AMA Victoria’s Workplace Relations team is working on for our members.

Enterprise Bargaining Agreement consultation

We have held the first consultation meeting on the contents of the next Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA). This was a productive discussion where members canvassed the conditions which need updating in the EBA and what pay increases should look like. We will continue holding these meetings online throughout the next few months.

Workplace planning 

AMA Victoria is urging the State Government about the need to engage in proactive workforce planning.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the public hospital medical workforce is already depleted and fatigued. It is not sustainable for many healthcare workers to continue working without taking leave to restore their depleted energy reserves once we reach ‘COVID normal’. Therefore, the Department of Health and Human Services must develop a workforce plan. We have written to the new Health Minister, Martin Foley, offering to work with the Government to develop such a plan.

Continuing Medical Education 

After negotiations with AMA Victoria, the DHHS has confirmed that $1500 of continuing medical education (CME) entitlements can be used for IT expenses other than simply laptops. This means that, other than desktop computers, doctors can use CME for purchases such as monitors and docking stations. 

Uniform allowances

We are aware of several hospitals not supplying adequate uniforms. Under the EBA, if a uniform is not supplied (or if your department head says you shouldn’t be wearing a uniform), you’re entitled to the allowance. If the allowance is not paid, approach your health service’s medical workforce unit. Please note that if you decline to wear the supplied uniform, you are not entitled to the allowance.
