FAQ

AMA Victoria's mentoring program is for doctors who are post-internship onwards. You must be a member of AMA Victoria, working in Victoria as a medical practitioner and have full registration as a medical practitioner with AHPRA. We have found a growing interest from doctors approaching fellowship seeking a mentor for support with the transition to consultant. We also have matched quite senior doctors seeking mentor for support whilst transitioning to a senior management or director role.

The AMA Victoria mentors are all experienced doctors and AMA Victoria members who have expressed their desire to give back to the profession by volunteering their time to mentor. We find our mentees often return to mentor too!

Mentors are experienced doctors from senior registrar level upwards who are fully registered with AHPRA and currently practising in their chosen field of practice. Mentors are expected to be familiar with the current training pathway of their specialty. AMA Victoria mentors may have been involved in other mentoring programs or have worked recently with junior doctors. All doctors volunteering as mentors will be provided with guidance about their role and training as necessary.

Mentor contact with the mentee after matching is expected to be monthly. Mentees are expected to prepare for each meeting with their mentor by providing a short list of topics they wish to discuss. Mentors need to commit to participate in the program for a 8-month period.

Both the mentee and mentor induction form provide mentees and mentors with the opportunity to specify their own preferences in relation to the criteria for matching. You will be guided to establish a mentor/mentee profile and you will work through exercises that help you establish your initial goals for joining the program. Our program facilitators will also discuss your aims for joining the program with you and get to know you a little so that they can source an appropriate match for you. This, plus the availability of doctors meeting these criteria, form the basis of the match. Many matches will be based on specialty but other criteria may be chosen such as other career goals or interests such as leadership development, research or teaching.

The AMA Victoria mentoring program facilitators create a match after having a post-induction conversation with each new mentee and mentor and carefully considering the preferences and goals of each party.

Completing the AMA Victoria Mentoring Program means you will be awards 12 CDP hours. Six CPD hours will be awarded at the half way mark of the program and the remaining six CPD hours will be awarded at the conclusion of the program. You will be required to complete a declaration that meetings with your mentor / mentee have taken place and reflections activities completed.
