There has been significant uncertainty around when doctors can commence Basic Physician Training (BPT1) under the National Framework for Prevocational Training (NFPMT).
A joint statement from the RACP, AMC, and PMCV has now clarified that doctors in their second postgraduate year (PGY2) can commence BPT1, provided they meet standard eligibility criteria.
Key points from the statement:
- PGY2 doctors can enter BPT1 without completing PGY2 of the NFPMT.
- Health services will set additional eligibility and selection criteria.
- Work is underway to align PGY2 NFPMT and BPT1 requirements to allow for co-compliance where possible.
- Future discussions will explore a centralised trainee selection process for BPT in Victoria.
