Do you know an older doctor who would enjoy companionship through the AMA Victoria Peer Visitor Program?
The AMA Victoria Peer Visitor Program currently has vacancies for older doctors who would enjoy regular visits for companionships from a younger doctor or medical student. We have some new volunteers joining our team who are keen to get to know an older doctor for conversation and companionship. The relationships are mutually beneficial as the older doctor can share their wisdom and experience with someone who is early in their career and the visits can enrich the life of an older doctor who may have become less mobile and isolated from former colleagues.
The program is based on having a common interest through medicine and intergenerational relationships. Many older doctors enjoy reminiscing and sharing stories of medical practice and the younger generation enjoys hearing about their experiences. Conversations can also cover any common interests or activities of mutual interest including chatting over a cuppa or going for a walk. Older doctor may be living independently at home or in supported accommodation or an aged care facility. The volunteers commit to visiting for one hour per fortnight at a mutually convenient time.
We welcome referrals from family and friends as well as directly from anyone who would welcome a visitor. Please contact Bethany Alley on [email protected] for more information or to make a referral.
