Class action into unsafe working hours in hospitals

15 February 2019

A Melbourne law firm has this morning announced it is investigating a class action into the systemic culture of excessive and unsafe working hours in hospitals.

AMA Victoria is greatly concerned about doctors working unpaid and excessive amounts of overtime.

This is an issue that impacts the health and wellbeing particularly of doctors-in-training and ultimately, the delivery of optimal care to patients.

AMA Victoria will always advocate strongly on this issue using methods that will not undermine the stability and sustainability of the public health system.

On behalf of our members, we will continue to robustly negotiate and enforce enterprise agreements, make representation before the Fair Work Commission and to public hospital administrators, and ultimately, continue to lobby state and federal governments for appropriate funding for public hospitals to ensure patient demand can be met without staff suffering stress and exhaustion.

We encourage our doctors-in-training to act collectively to address these problems by contacting AMA Victoria’s industrial relations team, so that we can take action to ensure the delivery of award entitlements and a safe workplace for doctors and patients.
