At the beginning of August, AMA Victoria’s professional development and careers team presented at the AMA National Conference on a key topic for healthcare: psychological safety – not just a buzzword.
Psychological safety isn’t a passing trend. It is a well-established concept with strong evidence, and it matters deeply in healthcare. At its core, it is the shared belief that team members can speak up, ask questions, raise concerns or admit mistakes without fear of embarrassment or punishment. This belief directly shapes how people contribute and collaborate, particularly in complex, high-stakes environments like healthcare.
When psychological safety exists, people are more likely to clarify information, contribute their expertise and engage in the open dialogue needed to make sound decisions. It supports the conditions for good care: discussion, feedback, reflection and learning.
Why is it important?
Psychological safety is fundamental for complex care and effective teamwork. It is especially critical in diverse healthcare teams where patient care depends on many individual experts working together. In such teams, psychological safety enables superior performance – groups make better decisions and achieve stronger learning outcomes than individuals working alone.
Our program
To address this vital concept for high-performing teams, AMA Victoria has launched Creating Psychological Safety at Work.
This 10-hour CPD program is delivered in a flexible 1:1 format. It offers practical, skills-based approaches to foster inclusive, safe and collaborative workplace cultures. Doctors at all levels and career stages can benefit.
Program structure
The program combines self-directed modules with three one-hour personalised education and coaching sessions delivered via Zoom with leadership educator and coach Dr Anna Clark. Participants receive nine hours of individualised leadership education, paced across 4–8 weeks to suit demanding schedules.
